Lions Thanksgiving 2006 / Disturbed Battle Creek

This week has been pretty crazy. I ended up taking some PTO for a few days and with the holiday gave me a nice five day weekend. On Tuesday I ended up driving home after work and hanging out. On Wednesday I saw Borat (pretty good) and Casino Royale (recommended by vanlandw highly). I also bought some new shoe laces.

On Thanksgiving brought the Lions game vs the Dolphins. I was at the game and it was a good time minus the Lions getting obliterated. Joey Harrington ended up being the hero for the Dolphins the Lions fans wish he could have been for us. He took all the abuse Lions fans could throw at him and pretty much spat in all their faces by the third quarter of the game. Some interesting tidbits from the game (R***y/vanberge bulleted list coming)….

  • The Lions got introduced to Korn - Blind.
  • The Dolphins got introduced to Billy Joel - Piano Man. Clear burn by Ford Field directed towards Joey Harrington who is a “concert-caliber jazz and classical piano player”.
  • During the halftime show the fireworks failed twice before working.
  • At the start of the second half it was foggy in the stadium because of said fireworks (personally asked twice why the stadium was foggy).
  • John Fogerty (halftime act) played for seven minutes.
  • For the longest time this was the first year the United Way didn’t have a choreographed halftime show (I don’t believe these are on the net) while the main act was playing. Sadly they just ripped off “people faking going crazy for the act” they do for the typical Super Bowl halftime show.
  • In attendance were two women with Pink Kevin Jones jersey’s with fake jems on them.
  • Crowd was ruthless to Joey though two quarters. After halftime the place was dead and pretty much empty before the start of the fourth quarter.
  • Sadly this year they stopped giving Thanksgiving Day Rally Towels. They gave Lion Tails. I guess lil man has a new toy….

Regardless the game was hysterical and I wanted to share those tidbits. If I remember more I’ll add them. After the game I ate tons of food and watched DiscoveryHD in true amazement.

Friday night I declined on doing true black friday shopping. While enjoying HDTV I came to the point I didn’t want to wait in line for any of the goods and decided on sleeping. After a fantastic breakfast I did make a short trip to Best Buy and made a few small purchases then drove back to GR.

Two hours after reaching Grand Rapids the trip to BATTLE CREEK took place to view the best band ever created…..Disturbed. The drive was pretty standard fair minus Climax, Michigan. Paid to parked and made perfect timing when Nonpoint hit the stage. Myself being a Grand Rapids concert go’er in the late 90’s early 00’s I’ve seen Nonpoint 75 times. Their songs are fun and they put out fantastic effort so they are fun to see. Also I have no idea where “Flyleaf” was. According to THIS they should have been in attendance. Personally I’m glad they weren’t there I’m sure I wouldn’t have enjoyed them. Also read the article it’s an amazing David Draimen interview.

Stone Sour was next and to be honest they were better then I expected. Corey Taylor was pretty much furious but I honestly wished he would have just came with his Slipknot buddies. As vanberge put it I would rather hear Wait and Bleed then anything Stone Sour has ever created. Also Corey’s George Bush tirade was pretty odd but got a big pop from the crowd. Music was good and heavy and fun.

When Disturbed got on stage that is when something amazing happened. They came this time equipped with pyro and bass cannons and redefined pain for the masses. Overall the show was pretty damn fun. AGAIN they didn’t play I’m Alive but the setlist was pretty damn good. It was fun to see the gato just burst every lyric to “The Game” perfectly and lol’ing when Disturbed played their most ridiculous song “Droppin Plates“. Set list time….

Guarded
Liberate
Sons of Plunder
Remember
Just Stop
Overburdened
Stupify
Deify
Prayer
Voices
Land Of Confusion
10,000 fists
The Game
Stricken
Down with the Sickness

They also did like a medley in the middle of the show with Pain Redefined, Dropping Plates and Meaning Of Life and a huge drum solo going into DWTS. Overall a pretty damn good show. Nothing too different from past shows minus a better stage setup. Totally worth the price of admission IMHO.

Tomorrow I will pick up leaves. Please follow every link in this post.

The Detroit Lions

I cannot put into words how difficult being a Detroit Lions fan is.  Sadly out of frustration and exhaustion I’m going to give it a shot.

Today’s game was a truly awful.  With the Lions losing to the lowly Cardinals there honestly are times I question my devotion. Time after time a “typical lions” holding penalty by the offensive line (Backus) after a momentum gaining first down makes one say whats the use. After all the defeats I’ve endured my 26 years on this planet what brings a man to keep coming back for more punishment.  Some would classify myself as someone who could possibly be masochistic in a past life but I think this post requires some confession.

When I was younger I was a massive sports fan.  As I grew up so did my interest in completive sports.  Oddly enough my devotion for the Lions hasn’t changed.  I would say for at least 15 years somehow I’ve ended up to at least one Lions game a year and for about as far back as I can remember I’ve only missed one Thanksgiving Day game. There will never be a better player in my eyes then Barry Sanders.  I still have the Wayne Fontes Detroit Free Press headline packed away when he was fired the day after Christmas years back. Chris Spielman was the man. I hate the Redskins for obliterating the Lions and removing them from the playoffs one step away from the Super Bowl.  I hate Andre Ware, Bobby Ross, Marty Mornhingweg, Steve Mariucci, Rod Marinelli, Matt Millen, Mike Willams, Roy Williams (he makes me unhappy/cringe when the Lions get first downs), R.W. McQuarters, Charles Rodgers, Mike McMahon, Charlie Batch, Scott Mitchell, Joey Harrington and many many more players and personal I wish I could remember on short notice.

How could someone so jaded be such a life long fan?  Honestly what Lions fan ISN’T jaded?   In the 2000’s what have the fans have to cheer for other then the beautiful Ford Field?  How can the best thing about an organization be the building they play in? Seeing how the Pistons, Tigers, and Wings have all won why can’t the Lions?

Sadly I will root for this team every week till my last breath.  Watching the game this week with my friends was both joyous and trying. Personally I’ve gotten to the point where it’s almost more fun to watch them loose and make fun of them rather then cheer and watch them win one game here and there.

24: Music From Seasons Four and Five

I woke up this morning, got bagels and donuts for breakfast and did my morning internet crawl. Totally not expecting any good news I got some FANTASTIC news. APPARENTLY the second volume of 24 soundtracks are being released TODAY. Normally I’m on top of these type of things but I must be slippin. I already own the first volume that contains tracks from Seasons 1-3 and the new CD has tracks from seasons 4-5. Sean Callery is without question the man.

I can already say Jack Storms the Gas Plant is going to be my favorite track. On my way to work today I will be stopping at Best Buy and purchasing this ASAP. You can also order online at bestbuy.com and amazon.com. Also I am not pirating this CD for anybody because the first one cost $23 dollars and I expect this CD to be around the same range :-P

The link below has samples….please buy it so they release more CD’s. I am utterly shocked they released a second one to be completely honest

Happy day brb!

Too Many Domains?

At this point I own FOUR domains (vanberge/r***y bullet list following)….

Today I got my notice to renew dancytime and I honestly not sure what I’m going to do with it. jjafuller feels i should “migrate the content to vanlandw.com….Then, try to come up with an idea for dnacytime”.

Personally I think he is right. I’ve been meaning to eliminate some of the dupe pictures and and really anything that is on that domain should be on vanlandw.com. Everybody look for changes on dancytime soon. Anybody want to buy it off me or have any good ideas?

24 Motivational Posters

Today I was listening to NPR Talk of the Nation and Dave Barry was on. He was promoting his new book and of course he was quite funny. This reminded me that Dave Barry is quite a 24 fan thus I decided to check his blog again. Awhile back Dave blogged about bauercount back in March 2006 thus I found out he is a Bauer Fan similar to myself. Regardless of the flaws he finds the action top notch and the “community” aspect of the show always rewarding.

Ok, back to the reason I’m creating this post.  Dave posted a link to some fantastic 24 Motivational Posters along the lines Kramer made back in May. Of course my favorite is Tools of the Trade but most of them are quite humorous.  Also don’t forget in ONE MONTH TODAY SEASON 5 COMES OUT ON DVD!  All you slackers have four weeks to catch up.

Free Grand Rapids Wireless

There are just times when you just feel like getting out of the house. For a homebody like me those times don’t come that often but they do. Sadly there are also times when you are away from home and require a wireless connection. Thank god for sites like Grand Rapids WiFI Search.

Personally I feel I’m addicted to the internet. When I want to go out and read or just grab a coffee my underpowered Dell a good majority of the time comes with me. I’m also a very cheap/dutch individual thus having free WiFi at my chosen destination is always a plus.

When I used to drive f/ Lake Michigan Drive to Fulton towards GVSU there was always construction on a small coffee shop I always wanted to visit. When the location finally opened I kept hearing good things about it but was hesitant to visit. Right now I’m updating from “The Bitter End” and the review on grwifi.net gave glowing reviews so tonight I decided to attend.

Right now I’m listening to the highly enjoyable new Deftones CD and drinking an overpriced Hazelnut coffee and when I finish this boredom induced post I’m going to continue reading Wizards First Rule. Best Saturday night ever? Far from it but relaxing productive and very vanlandw’esque. BRB

PS: Everybody make sure to consume vanberge’s most recent post and the comments that follow.

Nothing is better….

….then hearing Disturbed TWICE on the radio on my drive to work today. It was a fantastic reminder for me to update my website to say that I have tickets to see Disturbed in Battle Creek with special guests Stone Sour, Flyleaf & Nonpoint! The concert is November 24 (day after Thanksgiving) and will prove to be quite the busy day. I have a few days off from work the days leading up to Thanksgiving and plan on going home for the holiday. I also plan on black friday shopping the Friday of the concert. Thus it’s going to be a pretty insane day. Getting up early, spending tons of money (maybe), driving 150 miles back to Grand Rapids, driving who knows how long to Battle Creek, watching epic insanity, then driving who knows how long back to Grand Rapids.

I’m not sure if this was a good idea or not. Regardless hopefully soon I will have something valid to write about.
