Press Whore

I forgot to scribe a post about this so I might as well do it now while at work. Friday morning, at the time I slept in and was running late so I graced my e-mail quickly before taking a shower. Oddly enough I got my first media request! As everybody knows I’m a pretty low key guy. I wake up in the morning, eat my toast, and work my humble job I’m over qualified for. Apparently Sam Eifling a writer/researcher for Harper’s Magazine e-mailed me looking to discuss with me the numbers on the bauercount.com website I maintain.

At the time I was really apprehensive about contacting Sam. I personally was not very familiar with Harpers and upon first glance didn’t seem like the type of Magazine that would be for my target audience.  With talking with my friends I thought I would be “counterpoint” for a violence on TV piece.  After thinking about it I decided to give him a call and see how it goes.

I was running a bit late for work so I got in my car with my laptop with my e-mail and the count cached if I needed it and gave him a call.  Sam was a really cool guy to be honest.  In Harpers they do a piece where they used numbers and some how link them together somehow and Sam was just verifying the count is accurate. He wanted to use “38″ in the piece for how many kills Jack got in season 5. He asked me some questions and I answered them.  He also said full credit would be provided.

Overall it was a pretty positive experience.  Clearly he could have just used the information but it’s nice to see the press verify their sources.  AS SEEN HERE the information on the count was used in a print publication in the past. Shame they didn’t verify their source thus printed TOTALLY incorrect information. Now I’m happy to say the information on the site is about 99.9% accurate thanks to the help of many.  Regardless keep an eye open for next month’s Harper’s Magazine, I will be.

Difference a Day Makes

As you can see from my post from yesterday, things were looking pretty damn grim.  Work banged me over and I was going to miss Disturbed in concert.  Also my nice LG phone past warranty with no insurance took a dive into a mammoth glass of Meijers Soda.

Today things started off a little rocky.  With my telephone DOA I needed to figure something out for an alarm clock.  I have an iMac on my desk so I figured I would try turning that into an alarm clock.  Now there is something just mental about trying a new alarm clock out.  I slept like ASS!  Last night I was so tired when I went to bed when I woke up in the morning I kept having no idea what time it was. Three times I got up to check the time because I was so paranoid the alarm wouldn’t work.  Regardless I ended up sleeping in but making it to work on time.

When at work I was graced with some good news.  My co-worker “picked it up” and agreed to work for me for the Disturbed concert.  Thus I was graced with the PTO I requested and now I’m able to attend early morning shopping for Black Friday then rock out to DISTURBED in Battle Creek!

My roomate Flo is allowing me to borrow his old Verizon LG Phone.  This phone is already an upgrade from my POS so that is good news regardless.  Now in the past I’ve had a similar issue with my first phone.  That one died and I needed to get another one. Right now I share a plan with my dad and he is the primary holder on the account.  To put a new phone on the account he needed to present. So going to my local Verizon dealer was something I wasn’t looking forward to.  I get to the dealer and I’m greeted and instructed to put my name on a peice of paper.  After about a 10 min wait I was requested to attend the front desk.  The lady that helped me was quiet but efficient and hooked up the new phone to my account quickly and only for $15 dollars.

So yeah disregard that post from yesterday.  Everything worked out :-P

Worst Luck Ever

Today has been just an absolutely terrible day.  Not like terrible as in loss of job or anything tragic just the type of day where you do everything right and you get nothing back in return. Vanbergs likened my day similar to Jack Bauer’s “Day 4″ of “24″.  Jack did everything he thought was right.  He helped everybody, went beyond the call of duty, and did more for our country then anybody will ever know.  In the end…he was totally f’ed over and betrayed by everybody. Today I feel similar…
I will start with my first bout of bad luck first.  Recently I have agreed to work countless extra hours though the next few weeks and months.  Also I need to work third shift Christmas Eve/Christmas Day and New Years Eve/New Years Day. I recently came into posession of two Tickets to Disturbed in Battle Creek the day after Thanksgiving. Last week I put in a PTO request to have the day before Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving off.  Along with that request I sent an e-mail VOLUNTEERING to be on call for the weekend before Christmas. After all the goodwill i’ve shown to my employeer and fellow co-workers I didn’t think I would have a problem getting any days off I needed to go to the concert.  Also this request was put in over five weeks in advanced of the date.

Come to work today getting an e-mail saying my PTO for Friday was not approved, thus I have to work and miss Disturbed.  ugh

I come home tonight and have a very nice Spaghetti dinner with vanbergs.  While fuming over “The Disturbed Curse” aka somebody always gets screwed over for a Disturbed concert.  Vanbergs injured himself at a Disturbed concert while Taproot was playing concert thus MISSING disturbed.  Vanberge had to travel for work to Chi-town thus MISSING Disturbed.  Vanlandw put in for PTO five weeks before the event and couldn’t get the day off thus MISSING Disturbed.  I guess it was just my turn….

OK a little off topic, while sitting down watching Mythbusters I got a text message.  I replied to said text message and was going to put my phone away in my bag.  My bag was open so I kinda just tossed my phone nonshalantly into the opening.  APPARENTLY my phone bounced off the chair the bag was resting on and plummeted into full glass of soda.  My cell phone that had four months to last before getting a new one is ruined.  I spent $270 dollars on that phone new becuase of getting screwed over on a warranty issue is totally worthless.

If anybody has an extra old cell phone that would work with the verizon network they would be willing to give me please PLEASE think about letting vanlandw borrow it for awhile.  I really can’t stomach buying a $300 dollar phone right now :-(

Paintball Footage & Old Gallery Pictures

The above just cracks me up! Ok back to the topic at hand. Tonight I finally got some content on the web I’ve been meaning to for quite some time. Today I took the paintball video footage from Vanberge’s Bachelor Party and put it on the web. Sadly YouTube doesn’t allow video’s longer then 10 min for normal user accounts so I was stuck giving Google Video a chance. Honestly the upload process wasn’t terrible (other then having to install an application to do so) and maybe two hours after the initial upload the video was viewable. So everybody who wasn’t in attendance go ahead and view the footage. NSFW (Language) but regardless it’s hysterical.

The other content I wanted to get on the web was my old gallery photos from the DSL/WMIS hosted vanlandw.com. I ended up trimming down the pictures and putting up my favorite galleries. My original goal was to eliminate my dancytime simplegallery but at this point it’s not going to happen. Regardless if you can’t find the picture you are looking for at one location it’s at the other. Regardless soon I’m going to trim down dancytime to remove duplicates and just take it from there.

WTF?

Apparently Grand Rapids got some snow. I woke up this morning thinking it would be another fantastic fall day. NOPE two inches of snow on my car.  Really I don’t have much to say about this.  Fall is my favorite season of the year but I DON’T like it interrupted with white junk!

Google to acquire YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock

For reasons I cannot understand apparently Google is going to purchase YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars. I was going to type up a huge post about why I felt this is a BAD idea but apparently Mark Cuban sumed it all up for me.

When copyright holders finally stop sue’ing grandmothers they are going to move on from mp3’s to flash video files. I would have to say a good majority of YouTube video’s break some sort of copyright law. Will the RIAA sue the individual user or just go right for the money pit that is Google? I have to say google.

For YouTube this is a huge deal. Everybody is already ripping off YouTube. The idea isn’t inovative any longer. Everybody has a video sharing site. YouTube was just waiting for the large payoff (like myspace, facebook and pretty much every social networking site is) and they got it. YouTube got theirs but I didn’t expect Google to be the one taking on a sinking ship. Lawyers are just waiting to pounce on this one! Thoughts?

Slow Weekend / Random Pictures

It’s Sunday and I’m waiting for the Lions game to start. Last night I took the following picture and wanted to share it with everybody…

Lil Gato seems to be a fan of Guitar Hero. I’ve catched him quite a bit the last few days slumbering next to heroics and I was able to capture a few decent picutres. When I finally got around to pulling the photos off the camera I found some pretty interesting shots I thought would be fun to share.
