Today I totally caved and decided to see Live Free and Die Hard. After all the Rating Controversy I was fully prepared to boycott the movie for being released as a PG-13 film when all the previous installments were rated R. Now I’m fully aware a movie a movie can be good minus a R rating but come on this John McClane. Mr. Yippee-ki-yay, chain smoking, boosehound, ass kicker, and true brother in arms of Jack Bauer. Does one of the best Anti-Hero’s make a hero’s leap into 2007 or falter in a toned down for a wider audience pile of motherfuuuu?
First a story about my trip to the theater. My original thought on seeing the movie was I have free passes for Celebration Woodland. Vanbergs came home from Hart so we decided to go see the movie for free. The internet said there was a showing for early afternoon so we drove to Woodland. Upon arrival to the theater a prepubescent woman meets us at the locked doors saying the theater is closed till 5pm. Aghast I ask her why the theater is closed even though show times are on the web. Her answer was the worst answer I could ever imagine…
vanlandw: “Why are you guys closed?”
younglady: “I don’t know.”
How this woman had no idea why her place of business was closed I will never understand. Regardless we left the mall and went to Knapp’s Corner and paid 6 dollars to see the movie.

First a reminder to everybody. Mothers Day is Sunday, May 13. I should be away for that day but embarrassingly I thought it was this weekend!
I’ve recently seen a boat load of movies. Rather then dedicate an entire post to just one I figure a few “quick hits” would be enough to calm the fever of my readership waiting for fresh content. Spoilers all the way though……..
Smokin Aces: Not really what I expected. The wide cast was nice and there were a few really cool moments (sniper sequence, overall violence/gun play) but not really what I expected. Joe Carnahan as director is always nice but I did like his previous film “Narc” quite a bit more. Stylish and fun a good weekend renter check it out.
Underworld: Evolution: Felt like a typical “middle chapter” movie. Prior to theatrical release jja hooked me up with the directors cut of the original movie. Other then the ending rip-off of Equilibrium, “Underworld” was quite enjoyable. Decent action, hot vamp chicks and a decent videogame’esque storyline made for a good DVD watch. The second movie is kinda bizarre. I’ve never been a a fan of “flashback sequences” the movie starts with one and was my favorite part. Good sword play action rather then guns was a nice change of pace. Also anything not featuring Michael Corvin is welcome. His character should have died a pathetic Curtis Manning inspired death. He is a total loser and absolutely annoying when not his “Hybrid” form.
Also Alexander Corvinus is a total butthole. On his deathbed he just blows up his expensive cargo ship with all his dead commandos on it. Those poor men who died protecting him have died in vain and will never be given a proper burial. Regardless another decent popcorn movie.
Hot Fuzz: I saw this movie with the gato at Celebration Cinema in one of their new “DLP Digital Cinemas”. Next to the IMAX theater these new “Digital” theaters are quite impressive. Sound is clear and loud and the picture quality is refreshing. For the movie itself, quite hysterical. Being familar with CSI/Crime Shows, and 90′s action movies the parody won me over quickly. Highly recommended now I just have to see “Shawn of the Dead”.
Total Recall: Arnold in his glory. Total Recall has it all. Violence, nudity, hilarity, arnold quotes, one liners, and clones (babies). Pre-vanlandw I remember watching this movie on VHS and loving it! While watching the movie Sunday it really sinks in that there isn’t really a great new “action star” like Arnold was in his prime. His top movies really are pretty damn entertaining. In conversation it’s hard to rate top Arnold movies. There are his “good” movies like Terminator 2 then there are his “funny” movies like Commando.
My top five Arnold Movies:
Regardless everybody should do themselves a favor and have “Action Movie Sundays” and eat chicken and laugh out loud.

Apparently I had the most Lazy Sunday of all time. I woke up and ate tons of food and watched the newest Mythbusters (Shattering Subwoofer/Rough Road Driving). Then I went home and drank coffee and ate crap loads of food while computing and watching four movies. In order..
Showdown in Little Tokyo (IMDB) (wiki)I honestly haven’t watched many movies recently so it was nice to watch some action flicks and LMAO. Clearly Rambo 2 was my favorite. Somebody should do a very “bauercount’esqu” count of how many people Rambo kills in that movie because at one point he is killing people almost constantly. If this type of weekend comes up again can anybody think of just any hugely violent films we missed?
Update: I forgot about Robocop :-[!

Just in case this doesn’t hit the major news sites I just want to make sure everybody is aware of this. Confirmed from Microsoft it seems the Halo Movie seems to have targeted release date and a director named. According to “Gamasutra” it seems Summer 2008 is the date and Neill Blomkamp will be the director. I know every other nerd on the planet including myself was HOPING Peter Jackson would direct. Instead we get a first time movie director taking the helm in maybe the last movie I am seriously looking forward to.
Personally I hope he does a fantastic job but of COURSE I’m afraid he may just screw it up. From what I’ve read he seems to have potential so I’m not going to be a negative nancy.
Update: Yeah this “Neill Blomkamp” guy sounds like an idiot. On AICN he gave an interview and about the movie and said an awful thing…
Quint: Will we see Master Chief’s face?
Neill Blomkamp: You’ll have to wait and see.
He should have said flat out “no”….
Quint: As far as Master Chief’s voice, will you consider Steve Downes, who voiced the character for the games or will you more than likely go with a bigger name?
Neill Blomkamp: It’s just too early to be able to know anything like that yet.
He should have said “Steve will voice”….
Quint: I know this is very early, but will any of Marty O’Donnell’s score from the game make it over to the film? Is he a contender to compose the score for the movie?
Neill Blomkamp: It’s just way too early for any decisions like that
He should have said “yes”….
What a noob.
