Shutdown Day March 24th, 2007

” Shutdown your computer on this day and find out! Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer?”

If this was any other day of the week it would be impossible. Sadly every day for work I’m parked in front of a computer and there is nothing I can do about it. I’m so addicted to the computer on my free time I could be reading books or cleaning my room but NOPE I’m updating my homepage.

Tomorrow for 24 hours I really don’t see this being a problem. I’m going to turn off my iMac, shut the lid on my laptop, and shutdown my server and say good rididence! It should be a busy day and I have the gato, tepper, my friends, Sword of Truth and God of War 2 to keep me company. For some I could see this being tough but it could be good for the soul to brb the computer. Is anybody else willing to try this?

UPDATE: I did not fail!  This experiment lasted longer then expected I didn’t use a computer for over 36 hours.  For the first time in god knows when I ended up going to the YMCA and getting some “cardio” prior the playing paintball.  Got out of the house and enjoyed the fantastic Grand Rapids weather.  I also got a racquetball book out from the library now I just need to find somebody to go with me. Very close to defeating God of War 2 expect a post on that soon.

I could do this, but I doesn’t wanna. But I could just show up at your house around 3am to mock you….

This is probably one of the stupidest ideas I have ever seen. I mean, this is right up there with voting for Granholm.

I should have expected this response ;-)

Che I am not going to force you to do anything if you wish to ultilize your terminal there is nothing I’m going to do to stop you.

If you show up at 3am I will still be away also bring my copy of FFX back ;-)

jja I think it’s a good idea. ONE DAY MINUS A COMPUTER for me I will see if I cave or not….it’s a test of will. If I had a pressing deadline or if I get called into work I will break the shutdown day pact. i am vanlandw

I suppose in part you are correct. To say it is a “stupid” idea is not exactly correct, but it is an arbitrary promise. So, it is kind of like saying you won’t have sex until you are married; it doesn’t really hurt anyone but yourself.

However, I still hold that voting for Grahnolm was a stupid decision.

jja you should start your own religion.

I honestly don’t think I could do it if I was at home. If I were away from home, sure. But the Inspiron is pretty much my lifeline.

  8. vanberge says:

there is no way i am going to do this… Unless you guys come over and play basketball / play pool / play video games

  9. Adam says:

So, you’re turning off your computer, and plan on spending a decent chunk of the day playing video games?

Better: Spend the day with the TV off, the computer off, and the game consoles off – nothing but Actual Reality.

I’ll be the first to comment on “shutdown” day.

    Pick it up :-P .

brb. Taking vanlandw to the gym. lol.

From a digital exercise in futility, to a real-life exercise in futility. Vanlandw, you have the asshole of a seven year old.

In my 36 hours I played videogames for maybe an hour to be honest. I slept, relaxed, did laundry, got out in the weather, socialized, worked out, walked, and did a lot of good non tech things. I read about 100 pages in my book it was a fantastic weekend. I could almost imagine trying to have non-tech Saturdays it would be tough but it honestly wasn’t hard at all.

I would have to agree with Adam. Turning off your PC so that you can turn on your PS2 completely defeats the purpose of the campaign.

Since you haven’t figured this out on your own, let me explain:

    Video game consoles are computers.
