I don't know what it is about that damn franchise that "grinds my gears", but I thought it had to do with the fact that you play as a boy/teen elf. Then Shadow of the Colossus came along, and it's basically a Zelda-style adventure comprised solely of 16 gigantic boss battles. One of the best games of all time.
